Totnes Castle is within easy walking distance from the town centre and is a Norman motte built after the Conquest in 1066. You can still walk up the sloping stairs from the base of the castle to reach the top, which is an excellent viewing point across the whole of Totnes and across to the River Dart. The castle is also an English Heritage site, so tickets are free to members. Another completely free way to delve into Totnes’ history is by walking the Town Trail. This short walk around the town guides you through some of Totnes’ most historic sites, including the Royal Seven Stars Hotel, the Brutus Stone where Trojan Brutus is said to have arrived on English shores and East Arch Gate, which is the gateway to the old medieval town.
