Here in South Devon, we are truly spoilt for choice for opportunities to get the sand between your toes and it can be hard to decide where to head to for a beach day when the sun is shining.
South Devon has some of the most beautiful beaches and coves in the UK and with the wonderful weather we had over the May bank holiday, we were inspired to write about our top five sunny shores of South Devon!
1. Torre Abbey Sands, Torquay
If you are staying in one of our holiday cottages in the wonderful seaside town of Torquay, Torre Abbey Sands is the closest beach for you to enjoy. It's Torquay’s longest and sandiest beach, which makes it hugely popular during the hot summer months.
Practice your sandcastle building skills, hire a deckchair and enjoy refreshments from the nearby beach side kiosk.
At the end of the beach, you’ll find the beautiful Torre Abbey Meadows which is great for enjoying a game of crazy golf or a lazy picnic on the green, all whilst enjoying the beautiful South Devon coastline.
2. Blackpool Sands, near Dartmouth
The beautiful golden shores of Blackpool Sands are ideal for family beach days as well as a refreshing dip on a hot summer’s day. For the more adventurous, you can hire a wet suit and try out kayaking or bodyboarding in the fresh waters.
During the colder winter months, this beach is great for a stroll with the dogs and a cup of tea in the Venus Café whilst watching the waves roll in.
For those of you staying in one of our holiday cottages in Dartmouth, this beach is just a short 10-minute drive along the stunning coastal road.
3. South Milton Sands, near Salcombe
Hidden down narrow country lanes, once you have carefully negotiated the Devon back roads, you will not be disappointed with the magnificent South Milton Sands. The sandy shores are ideal for families and the waters are perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and rock pooling.
After a long day spent relaxing and recharging your batteries on this beautifully golden sandy beach, treat yourself to some excellently cooked sea food at The Beach House or bring your own BBQ and cook up a storm for everybody whilst enjoying the beautiful South Devon sunset.
The perfect beach if you are holidaying in one of our Salcombe holiday cottages.
4. Bantham, near Kingsbridge
Known as the surfer’s paradise of South Devon, this beach is normally very busy amongst water sport enthusiast, but is equally popular with families who flock to this popular beach armed with bucket and spades for a full day’s fun!
5. Slapton Sands, Torcross
This incredibly unique two-mile stretch of shingle beach is great for a beach day if you are holidaying as a large group. The shores are perfect for swimming and enjoy beautiful views across Start Bay.
If you’re feeling peckish or in need of ice-cream, head to The Torcross Boathouse, Start Bay Inn or Sea Breeze Café, which all serve refreshments throughout the year.
If you’re heading to South Devon with your four-legged friend, this beach is perfect due to its size and is dog-friendly throughout the whole year.
