Things to Do in Brixham & Galmpton

As you would expect, there are plenty of opportunities to get on the water in Brixham. Try your hand at mackerel fishing on one of the many charter trips and bring some fish home for tea. Take a boat excursion across to Torquay or one that explores the the craggy coastline and spot local seals and sea birds.

If you don’t mind an early start, there are regular fish market tours where you get to see all the different varieties of fish being sold. It’s a riveting experience and at the end of the visit you get to sample the fish of the day as part of fishermen’s breakfast platter.

Walking west along the marina you will find Breakwater Beach which is a small pebbly beach, perfectly sheltered for a dip in the sea. The beach café is handy for ice creams and lunches and you can sit outside and enjoy the stunning view of the bay.

A bit further around the headland is Shoalstone Pool, a popular open seawater swimming pool which if you don’t mind the initial chill, is a great place to have fun in the water. About a mile from the centre of Brixham is Berry Head, a must to visit place for its magnificent views and opportunities to spot wildlife both on land and in the sea. There are also some nice walks along the South West Coastal Path which takes you further along the coast towards Kingswear.

If you are a keen walker, discover a fantastic network of walks straight from the door of your holiday cottage in Galmpton. Enjoy a walk-through woods and fields and take in some spectacular views of the River Dart, or join the South West Coastal Path and head to Berry Head in Brixham for a panoramic view of Torbay.

Just a mile down the road, perched on the hillside overlooking the River Dart is Greenway House & Gardens, Agatha Christie’s former home and now run by the National Trust. Just below Greenway House on Greenway Quay you can catch a short passenger ferry across to the charming riverside village of Dittisham. Grab a drink at the Ferryboat Inn (known as the FBI to locals) or enjoy a freshly cooked seafood platter in the Anchorstone Café overlooking the water.
